An old town in Iwami County, occupying the Fukuro River basin in eastern Tottori Prefecture. In ancient times, it was the political centre of Inaba Province, and its historic sites include the remains of the provincial government office, Kokubunji Temple and Kokubunniji Nunnery, and the ruins of Tochimoto Temple. The town produces rice, 20th century pears, and leaf tobacco. Mount Oginosen at the southeastern end is part of the Hyonose-Ushiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National Park. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Tottori City along with the villages of Fukube in Iwami County, Kawaramachi, Mochigase, and Saji in Yazu County, and the towns of Kedaka, Shikano, and Aoya in Kedaka County. 93.40 km2 . 鳥取県東部,袋川流域を占める岩美郡の旧町。古代,因幡(いなば)国の政治中心で,国庁跡(史跡),国分寺・国分尼寺跡,栃本廃寺跡(史跡)などがある。米,二十世紀ナシ,葉タバコを産する。南東端の扇ノ山(おうぎのせん)は氷ノ山後山那岐山(ひょうのせんうしろやまなぎさん)国定公園に属する。2004年11月岩美郡福部村,八頭郡河原町,用瀬町,佐治村,気高郡気高町,鹿野町,青谷町と鳥取市へ編入。93.40km2。8552人(2003)。
