When transmitting digital data over a communication line or storing it in a computer memory device, it is necessary to recover from errors that occur. If retry is possible, the error is detected when it occurs and recovered by retrying. If retry is not possible, it is necessary to be able to correct the error. The simplest error detection method is to add one redundant bit to each series of bits and set the number of 1s in that bit to either even or odd, which disrupts the even-parity relationship and makes it possible to detect a single-bit error. 通信回線を通してディジタルデータを伝送するとき,コンピューターの記憶装置でディジタルデータを記憶したときなどには,生じた誤りを回復することが必要である。再試行が可能な場合には,誤りが生じたときにこれを検出して再試行によって回復する。再試行が不能のときには誤りを訂正できるようになっていなければならない。もっとも簡単な誤り検出方式は,一連のビットごとに1ビットの冗長ビットをつけ,その中に存在する〈1〉の数を偶数,または奇数のいずれかに定めておく方式で,偶奇性が乱されることで1ビットの誤りを検出できる。
