1874‐1961 Founder of the youth hostel movement. Born in Grunewald, Germany, into a family of primary school teachers, he became a teacher himself. In 1909, while on foot with his students, he was caught in a thunderstorm and had to spend the night in the village primary school. This led him to see the need for a common living environment centered around simple accommodation, and in the same year he built the first youth hostel in Altena, and in 1910 he founded the German Youth Hostel Association. He was president of the International Youth Hostel Federation from 1933 to 1937, and the organization temporarily ceased functioning during World War II, but from 1945 onwards, together with B. Schomburg and W. Müncher, he contributed to the re-establishment of the Youth Hostel Association. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
