Nashville - Nashville (English spelling)

A city in central Tennessee, the United States, and the state capital. Population 569,891 (2000). Located in the Nashville Basin at the foot of the Cumberland Plateau. Located in a fertile agricultural region, it is a distribution center for cotton, tobacco, grains, fruits, and beef cattle, and is also the commercial and industrial center of the central part of the state. Diverse industries such as glass, chemical products, clothing, tires, heating and cooling equipment, and food have developed. In 1925, a music program (later the Grand Ole Opry) started on a local radio station and became popular, attracting many record companies and recording studios, and developing into a country music (hillbilly) town. It once produced about 50% of the single records in the United States. Numerous recording studios still line the streets today. The printing and publishing industry, including religious books, magazines, and telephone directories, is also thriving.

A settlement was established by pioneers in 1779, and Fort Nashburgh was built the following year. In 1784, it became the first municipality west of the Allegheny Plateau. As it was the northern terminus of the Natchez Highway and a river port on the Cumberland River, it flourished as a cotton trading center, but later developed as a railroad hub. In 1843, it became the capital of Tennessee. Nashville is known as the "Athens of the South" and has many Greek-style buildings. It is also an educational center, with many universities, including Vanderbilt University, Fisk University, Tennessee State University, and the University of Tennessee at Nashville. It is famous for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Opryland USA (a music theme park).

アメリカ合衆国、テネシー州中央部の都市で、同州の州都。人口56万9891（2000）。カンバーランド台地の麓(ふもと)のナッシュビル盆地に位置する。肥沃(ひよく)な農業地域の中にあり、綿花、タバコ、穀物、果物、肉牛の集散地であるとともに、同州中央部の商・工業の中心地でもある。ガラス、化学製品、衣類、タイヤ、暖・冷房機械、食品などの多様な工業が発達している。1925年、同地のラジオ局で始まった音楽番組（後の「グランド・オール・オープリ」Grand Ole Opry）が人気を博したことで多くのレコード会社やレコーディング・スタジオが集まり、カントリー・ミュージック（ヒルビリー）の町として発展。かつては合衆国のシングル盤レコードの約50％を生産していた。現在も数多くのレコーディング・スタジオが軒を連ねる。また、宗教関係の本や雑誌、電話帳などの印刷・出版業も盛ん。

　1779年に開拓者たちによって集落がつくられ、翌年ナッシュバラ砦(とりで)が建設、84年、アレゲニー高原以西で最初の自治体としての町となった。ナッチェズ街道の北の終点であり、また、カンバーランド川に面した河港であったため、綿花の取引中心地として栄えたが、のちには鉄道の中心地として発達した。1843年にテネシー州の州都となった。ナッシュビルは「南部のアテネ」とよばれ、ギリシア風の建築物が多い。また、バンダービルト大学、フィスク大学、テネシー州立大学、テネシー大学ナッシュビル校など多くの大学があり、教育の中心地でもある。カントリー・ミュージックの殿堂とオープリランドUSA（音楽のテーマパーク）があることで有名である。
