Kim Ji‐ha (English spelling)
1941‐
A Korean poet, his real name is Kim Young-il. In Japan, he is also written as Kim Chi-ha. He was born in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province. He graduated from Seoul National University's Department of Aesthetics. He experienced the April Revolution of 1960 while he was a student, and continued to participate in anti-government movements after the May 16th Coup d'état in 1961 brought about the rise of the Park Chung-hee government. In 1969, he published "The Road to Seoul" in the poetry magazine Poet, and began his literary career. In May 1970, he published the tale of the Five Bandits, a scathing satire of the powerful and wealthy classes, in the magazine Thought World, and was arrested for violating the anti-communist law. The theme of his poetry is the resentment of the poor and powerless people and their anger against authority and violence, and his poetic form is unique, making full use of slang and onomatopoeia, based on folk traditions such as pansori and masked drama.
