Ayacucho (English spelling)

Japanese: アヤクチョ(英語表記)Ayacucho
Ayacucho (English spelling)
The capital of Ayacucho Department in south-central Peru. It is located about 330 km east-southeast of the capital Lima, in a fertile valley on the eastern slope of the Western Andes Mountains, at an altitude of about 2,700 m. It was founded in 1539 by F. Pizarro, a conqueror of the Inca Empire, and named Huamanga. In 1824, during the Latin American War of Independence, the Inca army defeated the Spanish government forces on the nearby Ayacucho Plateau, securing Peru's independence, and the city was renamed to its current name in 1825. It is currently the center of the surrounding agricultural region, distributing grains and livestock, as well as manufacturing textiles, pottery, leather products, and gold and silver filigree. Many old colonial buildings, including a 17th-century cathedral, are preserved in the city, and tourism is also thriving. San Cristóbal de Huamanga University, founded in 1677, closed in 1886 but reopened in 1957. A road connecting Lima and Cusco runs through the city. Population: 101,600 (1990 estimate).
