The Private Life of Gwind Filling

...It was an attempt to approach the inner truth of a subject through a combination of multiple photographs and captions rather than through visual commentary. The establishment of awareness of the new method of the "photo essay" was already indicated by the editor's commentary on Eisenstaedt's 1937 series "Wasser Women's College" as "the camera as essayist." Many masterpieces were produced mainly in the 1950s, such as Leonard McComb's "The Private Life of Gwynedd Fielding" (1948), which follows the daily life of a woman who comes to New York from the countryside to work and dream of becoming a fashion model, Eugene Smith's "Spanish Village" (1951), which depicts the people of a remote village living a traditional life under the Franco regime, and Dorothea Lange's "Irish Country People" (1955), which depicts Irish immigrants in America. With these photographs, LIFE conveyed to its readers the "hidden truth of the everyday world" that could not be found in so-called news photographs, and it can be said that it established a new form of photojournalism.
