…the historical name of the region centered on the Trans-Caucasian Republic of Armenia in southeastern Europe and the Armenian Plateau in eastern Turkey. The Armenians call themselves Hay (plural Hayk) and call this region Hayastan or Aiastan. The area in which they once lived as the main inhabitants was much larger than it is today, so in ancient times Armenia was sometimes used to refer to a wide area that stretched from present-day Georgia in the north, through Azerbaijan in the east to the Caspian Sea coast, the Mesopotamian lowlands in the south, and Cappadocia, which occupies the eastern half of Asia Minor in the west. …
