Indonesian Literature - Indonesian Literature
Literature written in Indonesian, the national language of the Republic of Indonesia. It does not include regional language literature such as Javanese literature or Sundanese literature. As literature written in Indonesian, which was established based on Malay, which has long been the common and cultural language of this region, it has a prehistory of classical Malay literature (→Malay literature), and its beginning is generally seen as the 1920s. During this period, novels on the theme of the conflict between old customs and new identities in local societies were produced through the publishing activities of Balai Bustaka (a library and publishing bureau) established by the Dutch government. Next, the main stage for literary activity was the magazine Pejanga Baru, written by young writers who were proud of forming a unified culture for a new era. After World War II, the "45 Generation" of writers, including Khairil Anwar, Idrus, and Pramoudia Ananta Toer, who were born during the turbulent period of Japanese military rule and the War of Independence, established a reputation for modern literature in both poetry and prose. Subsequent writers whom Yassin grouped together as the "Generation of 66" include Ayip Roshdi, Rendla Toufik Ismail, Trisnoyuono, and Nh. Dini.
