The chief god of ancient Egypt. Also known as Amon or Amun. He became dominant with the rise of the Middle Kingdom of Thebes, and was worshipped as Amun-Ra, syncretized with the older sun god Ra. During the New Kingdom, the temple of Amun and its priesthood wielded great power, crushing the temporary opposition of Amenhotep IV. The ruins of the Karnak Temple are famous. → Related articles Akhenaten | Egypt (region) | Thebes | Mut | Luxor Temple Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
