It is located in the Shirama Mountains on the western edge of the Kii Mountain Range, with the Hidaka River flowing through the center. There is a small amount of lowland along the main tributaries of the Hidaka River, with settlements scattered about. During the Edo period, Funatsu was a stopover point for boat traffic on the Hidaka River. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, with citrus fruits, strawberries, and vegetables being cultivated, and pig farming being carried out.
