An independent church formed in 1902 by Filipino Roman Catholics in opposition to the rule of the Spanish clergy after the 1896-98 anti-Spanish revolution. At the request of Senator Isabelo de los Reyes, who had been imprisoned for criticizing Spanish clergy and government officials, Filipino priest G. Aglipay, who had been excommunicated for his revolutionary activities, became the supreme bishop of the new church the following year in 1903. The style of worship has always been Roman Catholic, but the doctrine has been strongly influenced by Unitarianism. In 1946, the Unitarians withdrew from the church, and in 1947, a new declaration of faith based on Trinitarianism was made. In 1948, the Protestant Episcopal Church in America ordained three independent bishops. In 1961, the church achieved unity with the Church of England and the old Catholic churches.
