This old town occupies the mountainous area upstream of the Uda River in Uda County, central Nara Prefecture. Its center is the Furuichiba, a village settlement that developed as a market town. It produces vegetables, cedar, and cypress, and has been involved in the fur industry since the mid-Meiji period. The town was home to the Yamato Mercury Mine, but it has since closed. It is also home to Uda Mimakuri Shrine, whose main hall from the Kamakura period is a national treasure. In January 2006, it merged with Ouda Town, Haibara Town, and Muro Village in Uda County to become Uda City. 27.78 km2 . Population: 4,923 (2003). 奈良県中部,宇陀郡宇陀川上流の山地を占める旧町。中心は市場町として発達した街村集落の古市場。蔬菜,スギ,ヒノキを産し,明治中期以来の毛皮産業を行う。大和水銀鉱山があったが閉山。宇太水分(うだのみまくり)神社があり,鎌倉時代の本殿は国宝。2006年1月,宇陀郡大宇陀町,榛原町,室生村と合併し市制,宇陀市となる。27.78km2。4923人(2003)。
