A comprehensive view of America by British politician and historian James Bryce (1838-1922). Published in 1888. A classic of American studies. It describes the political organization and social situation of America at the end of the 19th century very objectively, enlightening the British who had previously viewed American society with contempt. Bryce was a member of the House of Representatives for many years as a member of the Liberal Party, and served as the US ambassador from 1907 to 1913. A complete translation was published by Hitomi Ichitaro in 25 volumes (1889-91) shortly after the publication of the original work.

イギリスの政治家で歴史学者のブライスJames Bryce(1838‐1922)の総合的なアメリカ論。1888年刊。アメリカ研究の古典。19世紀末のアメリカの政治組織，社会状況についてきわめて客観的に叙述し，従来軽侮の念をもってアメリカ社会を見ていたイギリス人を啓蒙した。ブライスは長く自由党所属の下院議員であったが，1907年より13年までアメリカ大使をつとめた。なお，原書の刊行直後に人見一太郎により《平民政治》25冊(1889‐91)として完訳が刊行されている。
