A city located in the southeastern tip of Gifu Prefecture, in the middle reaches of the Kiso River. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. Nakatsugawa River, in the center of the city, is on the south bank of the Kiso River and developed as a post town on the Nakasendo road. It is served by the Chuo Main Line and the Chuo Expressway. The electrical equipment industry accounts for about 45% (2001) of the city's manufactured goods shipment value, and paper and plastic product industries are also active. There are many forests and mountainous areas, so lumber and wood industries are thriving. The Naegi district on the north bank of the Kiso River was a castle town in the Edo period. Naegi stone is a specialty of the city. Mount Ena and Ena Gorge are located here. In February 2005, Sakashita Town, Tsukechi Town, Fukuoka Town, Hirukawa Village, Kawakami Village, Kashimo Village in Ena County, and Yamaguchi Village in Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture were incorporated. The area is 676.45 ^km2 . Population: 80,910 (2010).

岐阜県南東端，木曾川中流部にある市。1952年市制。中心の中津川は木曾川南岸にあり，中山道の宿場町として発達。中央本線，中央自動車道が通じる。電気機器工業が市の製造品出荷額の約45％（2001）を占め，製紙・プラスチック製品工業も行われる。山林，山地が多く製材，木工業が盛ん。木曾川北岸の苗木地区は江戸時代の城下町であった。苗木石を特産。恵那山，恵那峡がある。2005年２月恵那郡坂下町，付知町，福岡町，蛭川村，川上村，加子母村，長野県木曾郡山口村を編入。676.45km²。８万910人（2010）。
