A former town in Kitaakita County in northern Akita Prefecture. The Yoneshiro River flows through the southern end, and the Ou Main Line passes through Hayaguchi, the central settlement. Most of the town is mountainous and has a large forest area, with beautiful Akita cedar forests in the Hayaguchi and Iwase river basins. Agriculture and forestry are the town's main industries, and there is a lumber yard in Hayaguchi. In 1993, the Shirakami-Sanchi Mountains were registered on the list of natural heritage sites under the World Heritage Convention. In June 2005, it was incorporated into Hinai Town and Odate City in Kitaakita County. 306.77 km2 . 秋田県北部,北秋田郡の旧町。南端を米代(よねしろ)川が流れ,中心集落の早口には奥羽本線が通じる。大部分山地で林野面積が広く,早口川,岩瀬川流域に秋田杉の美林がある。農林業を基幹産業とし,早口には貯木場がある。1993年白神山地が世界遺産条約の自然遺産リストに登録された。2005年6月北秋田郡比内町と大館市へ編入。306.77km2。7961人(2003)。
