Japanese: コウヤマキ(高野槙) - コウヤマキ(英語表記)Japanese umbrella pine
Japanese umbrella pine (Kouyamaki) - Japanese umbrella pine
Also called Honmaki. A large evergreen tree of the cedar family native to Japan and often found in temple grounds and gardens, with a beautiful, neat tree shape. It can reach a height of 30m, with short, thin branches that spread horizontally, forming a narrow, conical crown. The bark of the trunk is reddish brown and splits into long, thin strips that peel off in thick strips. Leaves grow in clusters of 10-45 at the top of new branches. Each leaf grows from the axil of a spiral scale leaf, and is morphologically the same as two narrow, linear needles 8-12cm long that grow on a short branch fused together, with a vertical groove in the center of both sides.
