A blood vessel transplant is used to repair a missing blood vessel after removal of a diseased area, or to create a bypass by bridging an obstructed area of a blood vessel. The former is called a replacement blood vessel transplant and is performed for aneurysms, very localized arterial obstruction, or trauma. On the other hand, the latter is called a bypass blood vessel transplant and is performed for diffuse arterial obstruction over a somewhat wider area. Synthetic blood vessel substitutes (artificial blood vessels) are used up to the subclavian or iliac artery, while autologous great saphenous vein is used for more peripheral areas where the graft site bends due to body movement.
