This is a famous work on Christian devotion, said to be the second most popular work after the Bible. There was once much debate about its author, but it is believed to have been written by Thomas à Kempis (c. 1380-1471). He was born in Kempen near Düsseldorf, and at the age of 12 he joined the Brotherhood of Common Life, which G. Grote founded following the lifestyle of the first Christians. He became a priest and served as an abbot, but throughout his life he loved a simple life devoted to work such as copying, prayer, reading, and writing. The contents of this four-volume work are advice for the spiritual life, guidance to the interior life, the inner speaking of Christ, and the sacrament of the Eucharist. Rather than a complete explanation of Catholic faith or doctrine, it is a series of meditations to deepen the interior life of believers, especially monks.
