Yamataikoku Controversy

Academic debate on Yamataikoku, which existed in the Japanese archipelago in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The central issue in this debate is where Yamataikoku was located. There are also debates over the name of Yamataikoku, its distance, the nature of the state, and the character of Queen Himiko, and it is attracting attention as the largest and most diverse debate in the study of ancient Japanese history, and is a unique debate in that it is attended not only by scholars but also by ordinary people with an interest in ancient history. In the past, Yamataikoku was implicitly thought to be Yamato in the Kinai region and Himiko was Empress Jingu, as the article on the 39th year of the regency of Empress Jingu in the Nihon Shoki quotes the Weizhi and mentions the "Queen of Wa." However, it was not until the early modern period that the idea that Yamataikoku was not in Yamato began to emerge.

2～3世紀の日本列島の中にあった邪馬台国をめぐる学問的議論。この論争の中心は，邪馬台国がどこにあったのかという問題である。邪馬台国の国名，距離，国家の性格，女王卑弥呼の人物像などの論争もあり，日本古代史の研究の中にあっては，最大かつ多彩な論争として注目されており，学者のみならず古代史に興味をもつ一般の人々による議論の参加があって特異な論争ともなっている。古くには，《日本書紀》神功皇后摂政39年条などが《魏志》を引用して〈倭の女王〉のことにふれているように，邪馬台国を畿内大和とし，卑弥呼は神功皇后であると暗に考えられていたが，邪馬台国は，大和ではないとする考え方がみられるようになるのは，近世に入ってからであった。
