Doof Halma

Japanese: ドゥーフ・ハルマ
Doof Halma
This Dutch-Japanese dictionary was created in the late Edo period. It is also known as the "Zeuf-Halma." The Dutch trading post chief H. Doeff, who was staying in Dejima, Nagasaki, instructed and encouraged Dutch interpreters using F. Halma's Dutch-French dictionary, and began compiling it in 1812 (Bunka 9). It was completed in 1833 (Tenpo 4) after Doeff returned to Japan. A clean copy was presented to the shogunate, and one copy was kept each at the Astronomical Observatory in Edo and the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office. As it was the largest and best Dutch-Japanese dictionary at the time, it was widely transcribed and used by Dutch scholars, and the way it was relied upon is detailed in Fukuzawa Yukichi's autobiography, which describes the situation at Ogata Koan's Tekijuku.
