A large bamboo of the Poaceae family, its culms grow in clusters like rice stalks. Large culms can reach 20 cm in diameter and 20 m in height, with more than five branches per node and thick flesh. It has long leaves. Flowers bloom rarely, but often only on some, not all, culms of a single plant. Spikelets are clustered together in groups of three to six on the rachis, with six stamens. It is mainly grown in Taiwan and southern China, and in Japan it grows in the southern part of Kagoshima Prefecture. The culms are primarily used for construction, while live bamboo is decorative. Bamboo shoots that are boiled, dried and fermented become menma, manmi or shinachiku, which are often used in Chinese cuisine. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
