This area is located in the southern part of Kita-ku, Kyoto City. During the Heian period, it was a hunting ground, and there are records of Emperors Saga and Junnin visiting the area. Daitoku-ji Temple, the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, was established by Daito Kokushi in 1324 (Shochu 1), and is home to sub-temples such as Daisen-in and Koto-in, as well as famous gardens. To the north of Daitoku-ji is Imamiya Shrine, known for its Yasurai Festival. Other attractions include Kenkun Shrine, which enshrines Oda Nobunaga, and Bukkyo University.
