Dead Sea Scrolls

Japanese: 死海写本 - しかいしゃほん

Also known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. A general term for ancient manuscripts and religious documents, most of which date from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE, that have been discovered since 1947 in caves in the Qumran area near the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea. This discovery revealed the existence of the Qumran sect of the Essenes of Judaism, which resembles the early Christian church in many ways (they viewed the world as a battleground between light and darkness, and believed in the victory of the former and the coming of the Messiah), and has raised major questions for research into the period between the Old and New Testaments.

〈死海文書〉とも。死海北西岸に近いクムラン地区の洞穴などから，1947年以来相次いで発見された，大半が旧約聖書の前３世紀から後１世紀ごろの古写本と教団文書の総称。この発見により，原始キリスト教会と種々の点で類似するユダヤ教エッセネ派のクムラン教団（この世を光と闇の抗争の場と観じ，前者の勝利，メシアの到来を信じる）の存在が明らかとなり，新・旧約聖書の中間の時代の研究に大きな問題を投じた。
