808‐873 Johannitius, a Nestorian physician and translator. Born in Hira on the Euphrates River, the son of a pharmacist, he studied medicine under Ibn Masawayh in Baghdad, learned the methods of textual criticism developed in Alexandria, and then studied Arabic philology in Basra. Returning to Baghdad, he translated Galen's works for Jibra'il bin Bukhtish, which was highly praised and introduced him to the Abbasid caliph Ma'mun.
