Velveteen - Velvet

Japanese: 別珍 - べっちん
Velveteen - Velvet
Velveteen A corrupted form of velveteen, a common name for cotton velvet. A type of weft pile fabric. After weaving the weft threads on top of the ground weave, the pile is cut in the middle to create a raised pile over the entire surface of the fabric. The longer the pile is raised, the longer the pile will be. It is thick and soft to the touch. There are plain weave velvet and twill weave velvet, and it has a wide range of uses, including tabi fabric, women's and children's clothing fabric, hat fabric, interior decoration fabric, and geta thongs. It began to be woven in Lyon, France around 1750, and was domestically produced in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture in 1896. From the Meiji to Taisho eras, it was called Karaten or Kinten, but it is said to have become the general name for velvet fabric after Ryosuke Matsui of Tokyo Maruhei registered the design for velvet tabi in 1917.
