A perennial plant of the Araceae family (illustration) that blooms as the snow melts, surrounded by dark purple-brown spadix. The rhizome is thick, and the leaves grow from the top. The leaves consist of a petiole and a large, circular, cordate blade, but the leaf sheath commonly found in other Araceae plants is not differentiated. When the plant sprouts in spring, it produces an elliptical spadix surrounded by an egg-shaped spadix, usually dark purple-brown in color, but sometimes green. The flowers are bisexual, with four tepals and four stamens, and the ovary is locular and contains one ovule.

雪どけとともに暗紫褐色の仏焰苞（ぶつえんほう）につつまれた花を開くサトイモ科の多年草（イラスト）。根茎は太く，頂部から葉を根生する。葉は葉柄と円心形の大きな葉身からなるが，他のサトイモ科植物に多く見られる葉鞘（ようしよう）部は分化していない。春の萌芽の時期に卵形の仏焰苞につつまれた楕円形の肉穂花序を出し，色は通常暗紫褐色であるが，ときに緑色のものもある。花は両性花で4枚の花被片と4本のおしべを有し，子房は1室で1個の胚珠をいれる。
