Majima argued that brick and reinforced concrete wall buildings could not withstand the enormous force of a major earthquake, and that only buildings with the flexibility of a steel frame structure could theoretically withstand earthquake motion. …剛構造rigid structureに対する用語で，1927年ごろから31年ごろにかけて，真島健三郎と佐野利器の間で交わされた柔･剛構造論争によって，建築家だけでなく一般社会の人々にもよく知られるようになった。真島は煉瓦や鉄筋コンクリートの壁体建築は大地震による巨大な力には耐えられず，鉄骨架構の柔軟性をもった建築だけが理論的に地震動に耐えられるものだと主張し，佐野は真島理論は複雑な地震現象を単純化しすぎていて非現実的であり，実務上は静的な設計震度(1924年から市街地建築物法に規定された)を用いて建物をできるだけ剛強に設計すべきだと主張した。…
