Kodansha Co., Ltd.

Japanese: 講談社[株] - こうだんしゃ
Kodansha Co., Ltd.
A publishing company founded by Noma Seiji in 1911. Noma had previously founded the Dai-Nippon Yubenkai in 1909, which published Yuben. In 1925, the two companies merged to form Dai-Nippon Yubenkai Kodansha, and in 1958 changed its name to Kodansha Co., Ltd. At the same time as Kodansha was founded, it launched the magazine Kodan Club, which was well received, and subsequently published Shonen Club, Gendai, King, and other magazines, which at one time accounted for 70% of the circulation of all magazines in Japan. King in particular was a huge success as a new general-purpose magazine for the masses. It was widely accepted by the masses, and was called Kodansha Culture in contrast to Iwanami Culture. Around the time of the Great Kanto Earthquake, the company began publishing books, and in 1946 after the war, it expanded into the field of pure literature with the launch of Gunzo, and also responded well to new trends in popular culture such as comics, and has been active in a wide range of publishing fields. The record division, which was established in 1930, later became King Records Co., Ltd. As a general publisher, it is the top in terms of the number of new publications and sales. In 2011, the company's capital was 300 million yen, and its non-consolidated sales for the fiscal year ending November 2011 were 121.9 billion yen.
