Asaino Sozui - Asaino Sozui
Year of death: Tenbun 1.5.19 (1532.6.22)
Year of birth: Bunmei 5 (1473)
A publisher and businessman in the late Muromachi period. His pen name was Yukitei. His family was wealthy merchants in Sennan (Sakai City), whose trade name was either Notoya or Tonoya. He loved literature, and is said to have been knowledgeable in medicine and specialized in women's medicine (obstetrics and gynecology), but he was not a medical professional. He was a follower of Daibayashi Soso, a monk at Daitokuji Temple (his Buddhist name was Yukitei Sozui Koji). He invested his wealth in publishing businesses, which left his name in bibliography. He published the printing of "Santai Shi" (Asai-no edition) and the standalone edition of "Analects" (Tenmon edition, published posthumously in 1533). He also reprinted "Isho Taizen" (Complete Collection of Medical Books) written by Kuma Soritsu of the Ming Dynasty in 1528, with a postscript by Gesshu Jukei. This was the first printing of a medical book in Japan.
