Culottes - culottes (English spelling)

Culottes - culottes (English spelling)

A term referring to shorts in general. Historically, it has been worn by men since the late 17th century as a basic style, and the long trousers are called pantaloons. It is also used in English, but it generally refers to divided skirts for women's sports, that is, shorts cut to look like a skirt at first glance. In the 17th century, culottes were worn in combination with jackets called doublets or justocoles, and some were quite loose-fitting, but in the 18th century, when they were worn with slim loins, they became tight-fitting and the hem was fastened with about three buttons with a slit on the outside of the knee. After the French Revolution, with the emergence of pantaloons, culottes rapidly declined as general clothing, but continued to be worn as evening wear and ceremonial wear. They also continued to be worn for sports such as horse riding, hunting, and golf, and at the end of the 19th century, they were adopted for women's sports in a different form. Nowadays, divided skirts are not only used for sports, but are also combined with various outerwear for general street and office wear, and have also made their way into evening wear, becoming an indispensable element of women's clothing, next to skirts and trousers.
