An ancient city located in Bavaria, central Germany, along the middle reaches of the Main River. Industries include machinery, textiles, and wine brewing. It has a university (founded in 1582), Marienburg Castle, and Würzburg Palace. A bishopric was established in 741, and it prospered under the Hohenstaufen dynasty. 133,800 people (2011).
