Jundo Ikota

A doctor during the Meiji Restoration period at the end of the Edo period. The first person to perform a Caesarean section in Japan. His childhood name was Tomijiro, given name Yasushi, pen name Chien, given name Shigemitsu, commonly known as Jundo, pen name Nararyo, and Shirakaya Shoshashujin. The eldest son of Jidayu Shigemitsu. Born in Ikota Village, Chichibu County, Musashi Province (Saitama Prefecture). He became a disciple of Komuro Motosada, a Western obstetrician who was a student of Adachi Chojun. After studying in Edo, he returned home and opened a practice in Musashi-Omiya (Chichibu City). On April 25, 1852 (June 12, 1852), at the request of his nephew Okabe Kinpei, a fellow student, he made a house call on Motohashi Mito in what is now Sakamoto, Hanno City, and with Okabe as his assistant, he delivered a dead baby with a prolapsed left arm and leg and umbilical cord by Caesarean section, saving the mother. In his memo "Hysterectomy Jikki," he wrote about his excitement and confidence in the results of Western medicine. On June 12, 1987, a monument was erected on the grounds of the Motohashi family to commemorate the birthplace of cesarean section in Japan.

幕末維新期の医者。日本で最初の帝王切開施術者。幼名は富次郎,名は寧,字は致遠,諱は重満,通称は純道,号は楢陵,白茅樵舎主人。治太夫重満の長男。武蔵国秩父郡(埼玉県)伊古田村生まれ。足立長雋門下の西洋産科医小室元貞に入門。江戸遊学後帰郷し,武蔵大宮(秩父市)で開業。嘉永5年4月25日(1852.6.12),同門で甥の岡部均平の要請で,現飯能市坂元の本橋みとを往診,岡部を助手に左手足・臍帯脱出の死児を帝王切開で出し,母体を救った。メモ『子宮截開術実記』に,西洋医術の成果に対する感動と確信を記している。昭和62(1987)年6月12日,本橋家地内に「本邦帝王切開術発祥之地」の記念碑が建てられた。<参考文献>石原力『西洋産婦人科翻訳書集成』2巻
