They are also broadly divided into those with a microcrystalline calcite matrix (micrite) and those cemented with coarse calcite (sparite), and are further divided according to the ratio of the constituent particles (carbonate clastic fragments, oolite, biological remains, pellets). There are many proposals for the classification of limestone, but no consensus has been reached.
