The capital of Sukhothai Province in northwestern Thailand. It is located 370 km north of Bangkok, on the east bank of the Yom River. It was the capital of the Sukhothai Dynasty, the first independent kingdom of the Thai people, which boasted power and a unique civilization, but it declined with the establishment of the Ayutthaya Dynasty. The current town was built 12 km east of the old capital by King Rama II in 1786, but it remains a regional commercial center. Temples and other ruins that testify to the prosperity of Hindu Buddhism remain, and in 1991 it was registered as a World Heritage Site along with the nearby ruins of Sawankhalok and Si Satchanalai. In addition to rice, corn, cotton, and beans are cultivated in the surrounding area. Population: 23,074 (estimated 1985).
