Opening ceremony - Kaigenkuyo

Opening ceremony - Kaigenkuyo

Kaigen means to open one's eyes, and in Buddhism it means "attaining enlightenment." It also refers to the ritual or practice of putting a soul into a newly created or repaired Buddha statue or mandala. Since the soul is put into the Buddha, it is also called Kaigenko, Kaikomyo, or simply Kaiko or Kaimei. When this ceremony is held on a grand scale, it is called Kaigen-kuyo. The first grand ceremony held in Japan was the Kaigen-kuyo ceremony for the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple on April 9, 752 (Tenpyo-Shoho 4), which was attended by Emperor Kōken, Emperor Shomu Daijō, and Empress Kōmyo.
