Originally, it was music that accompanied marches, used to keep troops in step when marching. It corresponds to the English word "march." It usually has a clear rhythm of 2/4, 4/8, or 6/8, and is played by wind and percussion instruments. From around the 16th century, it began to be used in art music to describe the state of marching. It was also linked to ceremonies, and "wedding marches" and "funeral marches" were composed. Many kinds of marches have developed in the field of popular music. For example, the Spanish paso doble, the Brazilian marcia, and the Cuban conga could originally be considered types of marches.

元来は行進に付随する音楽で、軍隊などが行進するとき、足並みをそろえるためのもの。英語のマーチmarchにあたる。通常は2拍子、4拍子、あるいは8分の6拍子の明快なリズムをもち、管楽器と打楽器で演奏される。16世紀ごろから芸術音楽にも用いられるようになって、行進のありさまを描写するようになった。また儀式と結び付いて、「結婚行進曲」「葬送行進曲」などが作曲された。ポピュラー音楽の分野でも多くの種類の行進曲が発達している。たとえばスペインのパソ・ドブレ、ブラジルのマルシャ、キューバのコンガなども、もともとは行進曲の一種とみなされよう。
