《Operative method》

...the method of solving differential equations formally by performing differential and integral operations on functions symbolically or algebraically is called the operator method. At the end of the 19th century, British engineer O. Heaviside used this method successfully to solve ordinary differential equations that describe various phenomena in electrical engineering, as well as partial differential equations called the telegraph equation. Since then, operator method has become a unified theory.
