Horned Sesame - Horned Sesame

An annual plant of the family Hornbillaceae (APG classification: Hornbillaceae). It is said to be native to North America and Mexico. It grows to about 1 meter tall. Its branches are broad and spread out. The leaves are alternate or opposite, ovate, soft and downy. In summer, it produces racemes that produce pale purple or milky white flowers about 5 cm long. The fruit is a capsule about 15 cm long with a beak-like hook-shaped upper part. The shape of this fruit is highly prized, and the ripe fruit is dried along with the branch and used for flower arrangements and decorations. The name comes from the shape of the fruit. It is also called "traveler's horn" because the horn-like protrusions get caught on pedestrians' clothes and cause them trouble. The young shoots are edible as pickles.

It is easy to grow and grows in sunny, well-drained areas. It is propagated by seed and sown in spring.

ツノゴマ科（APG分類：ツノゴマ科）の一年草。北アメリカからメキシコにかけてが原産地といわれる。高さは約1メートル。枝は分枝し、広く開張して茂る。葉は互生または対生し、卵形で質は柔らかく、綿毛がある。夏、総状花序をつくり、淡紫色または乳白色で長さ約5センチメートルの花を開く。果実は蒴果(さくか)で、長さ約15センチメートル、上部はくちばし状の鉤角(こうかく)形を呈する。この果実の形を珍重し、熟果を枝ごと乾かしていけ花、装飾に利用する。名は、この果実の形に由来する。また、この角(つの)状の突起が歩行者の衣服にひっかかって悩ますところからタビビトナカセの名もある。若芽はピクルスとして食用にする。

　日当り、排水のよい所に適し、育てやすい。繁殖は実生(みしょう)により、春播(ま)きとする。
