Guinness PLC
A major British alcoholic beverage company. Founded in 1759 by Arthur Guinness when he bought a small brewery in Dublin, Ireland. Initially producing ale and beer, Guinness began specializing in the production of dark beer in 1799, which later became known as stout and became Ireland's signature beer. The company expanded its business and became Ireland's largest brewer in 1833 and the world's largest brewer in 1883. In 1886, Arthur Guinness Sons was established, and in 1982 it went public and changed its name to Arthur Guinness & Sons, and in 1986 it changed its name to Guinness. In 1985, it acquired Scotch whisky maker Arthur Bell & Sons, and in 1986 it acquired Distillers. It has also acquired liquor companies in Spain, Germany, France, and the United States, and now has a large market share in the global Scotch whisky, rum, and gin markets. For people sharing trivia in the pub, the Guinness World Records has been published since 1955. In 1997, the company merged with the British company Grand Metropolitan and changed its name to Diageo.
