Max Nettlau

1865‐1950
Austrian-born historian. Known as the "Herodotus of Anarchism." He first studied Celtic grammar in London and joined the Socialist League. After 1890, he began writing the history of anarchism, writing three volumes of "A Life of Bakunin" (1896-1900), "A Life of Malatesta" (1921), and three volumes of "A History of Anarchism" (1925-31). After World War I, he lived in Vienna and was active in the syndicalist German Free Workers' Union. He went into exile in 1933 and continued working at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam.

オーストリア生れの歴史家。〈アナーキズムのヘロドトス〉と呼ばれた。初めロンドンでケルト語文法を研究，社会主義者連盟に参加。1890年以降アナーキズムの歴史叙述に着手，《バクーニン伝》3巻(1896‐1900)，《マラテスタ伝》(1921)，《アナーキズムの歴史》3巻(1925‐31)を執筆した。第1次大戦後ウィーンに住み，サンディカリスム系のドイツ自由労働者同盟で活動。1933年亡命，アムステルダムの国際社会史研究所で仕事をつづけた。
