Medically, it is called oral mucosa. It is a keratotic white spot that occurs on the oral mucosa. The WHO Committee on Precancerous Conditions of the Oral Cavity (1967) defined it as a white spot that cannot be removed by scraping and cannot be classified as another diagnosable disease. It occurs anywhere in the oral cavity, but is most common on the gums, buccal mucosa, and tongue. It is more common in men than women, and the majority of cases are over 40 years old. The color, shape, and spread vary, and some are white, pearly, grayish white, and even erythematous. The surrounding border may be clear or unclear, and the surface may be smooth or raised, rough, wrinkled, pavement-like, papillary, or warty.
