…The correct title is “The Story of the Philosopher Shuntipas.” As the name Shuntipas, derived from the Persian name Sindbad, attests, it contains material of Persian origin, and was compiled by Michael Andreopoulos at the end of the 11th century. The Syriac version on which this Greek version was based dates back to the Pahlavi original via an Arabic version by Musa in the 9th century, but neither of these have survived to the present day, so this Greek version represents the oldest text. …
