A facility installed on the ground that uses radio waves to help determine the position of a flying aircraft and to guide its course. Some modern aircraft use inertial navigation systems that use only on-board equipment and do not require assistance from the ground, but inertial navigation is mainly used for long-distance navigation over the ocean. Radio waves from ground-based radio stations are used for land and medium- and short-distance navigation, and inertial navigation is a key facility for air traffic control systems, which ensure that many aircraft fly routes safely and efficiently.
