Also known as a differentiable manifold. The most familiar example of a manifold is the surface of a sphere such as the Earth. That is, as the Earth is represented by a flat map, when we look at it locally, we can introduce coordinates that are uniquely determined as north-south, east-west, or right-left, up-down, but these coordinates cannot be extended to the whole world without any excess or deficiency. Therefore, we prepare several maps that cover the whole world and create an atlas to obtain the whole picture, and general manifolds are introduced and defined based on roughly the same idea. 可微分多様体ともいう。多様体のもっとも手近な例は地球のような球体の表面である。すなわち,地球は平面地図によって表されるとおり,それを局所的にみるときは,東西南北ないし右左上下一意に定まった座標を導入することが可能であるが,この座標を全体に過不足なく拡張することはできない。そこで,全体をおおうような数枚の地図を用意し,地図帳を作ることによって全体像を得ることが行われるわけであるが,一般の多様体も,ほぼこれと同じ考えの下に導入,定義される。
