Inflammation of the thyroid gland can be divided into three types: acute (suppurative) thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, and chronic thyroiditis, each of which has a clearly different pathology as well as a different etiology. Acute thyroiditis is a rare disease that occurs when pyogenic bacteria enter the thyroid gland via the bloodstream or directly from the pharynx through a remnant of the thyroglossal duct or a pyriform sinus fistula.
