A village in Asakura County in the central eastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. Population 1,292 (1995). Located where Mt. Hiko and the Chikushi Mountains meet, most of the village area is mountainous at an altitude of about 700m, with the Oishiwara River flowing west through the northern basin. A key transportation point since ancient times, the village was a route for alternate attendance during the Edo period, and flourished as a post town and a temple town for pilgrimages to Mt. Hiko. 90% of the total area is forest, but 50% of that is national forest, and more than 30% of the private forest is owned by landowners outside the village, so the economic effect is small. The agricultural management base is weak, but in recent years there have been efforts to develop tourist farms for growing apples, pears, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
