Ookubo Shibutsu - Ookubo Shibutsu

A Chinese poet of the late Edo period. His given name was Gyo, his pen name Tenmin, his nickname Ryutaro, and his pen name Shibutsu. He was born in Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture) as the son of a doctor. He studied poetry and prose at Yamamoto Hokuzan's Keigijuku and Ichikawa Kansai's Koko Poetry Society. In 1806 (Bunka 3), he built the Shisei-do at Otama-ga-ike Pond in Kanda, Edo, and from there he became a leading figure in the world of Chinese poetry in Edo during the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-1830). His style of poetry, which was simple and refreshing and had a flavor similar to haiku, gained him popularity. He was also skilled at painting bamboo. His poetry collections include the first three volumes of the Shisei-do Poetry Collection (1810-1838), Saiyu Shiso (1819), and Hokuyu Shiso (1822), among others. He died on February 11, Tempo 8. His grave still remains in Honmachi, Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

江戸後期の漢詩人。名を行、字(あざな)を天民、通称を柳太郎、号を詩仏という。常陸(ひたち)国（茨城県）に医者の子として生まれる。山本北山(ほくざん)の奚疑塾(けいぎじゅく)や市河寛斎(いちかわかんさい)の江湖(こうこ)詩社に入って詩文を学んだ。1806年（文化3）江戸・神田お玉が池に詩聖堂を造築し、ここを根拠地に文化・文政期（1804～30）の江戸漢詩壇の大御所となった。平易清新な、俳諧(はいかい)に近い味わいの詩風が人気を得たのである。竹の画も得意とした。詩集に『詩聖堂詩集』初3編（1810～38）、『西遊詩草』（1819）、『北遊詩草』（1822）などがある。天保(てんぽう)8年2月11日没。墓は神奈川県藤沢(ふじさわ)市本町に現存する。
