Goishi Coast

Japanese: 碁石海岸 - ごいしかいがん
Goishi Coast

This scenic spot is located on the Masaki Peninsula, at the southern tip of Ofunato City, in the southeast of Iwate Prefecture. It is a coastal terrace made of alternating layers of Cretaceous sandstone and shale, which have been eroded by the sea to create a 100-meter cliff, as well as strange sights such as caves, cave entrances, and blowholes. The terrace is covered with beautiful forests of red and black pines, and vegetation such as Japanese juniper and Siberian lily can also be seen. On the west side of Goishi Cape at the tip of the peninsula, there is Goishihama, where go stone-shaped shale forms a beach. Rest houses, promenades, camping villages, etc. have been developed in the vicinity, and it is an outstanding scenic spot in Sanriku Fukko National Park (formerly Rikuchu Kaigan National Park), and it has been designated as a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument. Take a local bus from Hosoura Station (bus stop) on the JR Ofunato Line BRT (Bus Rapid Transit System), or walk for about 40 minutes from Goishi Kaiganguchi Station.
