A novel by American Mrs. Storr. Serialized in a magazine in reaction to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, it became an instant bestseller when it was published as a book in 1852. It contrasts the fates of the Shelby family's black slaves, Tom and Eliza. The faithful and devout Tom is separated from his wife and child and handed over to slave traders, and is ultimately tortured to death by his cruel master, Legree. Meanwhile, Eliza escapes when she finds out that her child is to be sold, and with the help of the "underground railway" in the north, she arrives in Canada and is freed. Although some of the slave owners are compassionate, the slaves are ultimately disposed of as property, and the tragedy of families being torn apart is depicted through various episodes.
